AS Roma vs SS Lazio

Every city has its own football culture. Some are separated by the sea (Gala-Fener), some are separated by religion and politics (Celtic-Rangers), some are separated by economic conditions (Pana-Olympiacos), and some are completely intertwined but also completely different from each other, AS Roma vs SS Lazio, exactly It is like two separate trees sprouting in a city. In Italy’s fiery football environment, both teams defend their sides with their own profile.

Although they have capital teams, it is clear that they are not the most successful club in Italy. In fact, the aims of the establishment are shaped somewhat because of this issue. Even though they have a very low average of success compared to the successful Northern teams, they do not lose the feature of being the hottest derby in Italy. Despite being the capital of Italy, Rome, which remains a more modest city compared to the north, continues to maintain this feature in terms of football. The most obvious difference between Roma and Lazio supporters is their outlook on life. These two team supporters, who are completely different in terms of politics, culture, and sociology, seem to represent two different cities, 500 kilometers away from each other, rather than the same city. There is a saying in Italy: “Not all Lazios are fascists, but all fascists are Lazios’”. In contrast, Romans are also known as communists. Lazio supporters, who never gave up on racism, mounted the Roman uniform on the photograph of Anne Frank, one of the symbols of the Holocaust, and spread it throughout the city in 2017. There is a large audience that believes that the golden eagle figure on Lazio’s club crest directly symbolizes fascism.

As I said, the Rome-Lazio rivalry is a competition based on surpassing each other rather than cups and championships. Politics has always existed in this competition. When examined historically, the Rome-Lazio rivalry shows parallelism with the history of right-left actions in Italy. There are certain associations and clubs where these youth, who was used as a striking force against the left, started to rise with the 1968 generation. One of the meeting centers in the capital is the supporter groups of the SS Lazio, which never denied that it came from a fascist tradition. The closeness of left-leaning people who are interested in football in the capital to Rome shows itself in this atmosphere. By the end of the 1960s, a spontaneous bloc emerged between the Lazio tribunes and the Romans. While the revolutionary students, workers, hippies, and anti-system anarchists in the city gathered on the Roman front; Lazio, on the other hand, is supported by conservatives, relatively less educated but economically subordinate to the middle class. Even though their ideas are different, their cities are common. The name of the region is Lazio, the name of the city is Rome! It may not be the match of the two most successful teams in the world, but it is definitely the hottest derby in the world.
